The 'Circle Flute' by Brynjar Sigurðarson
Imagined by Brynjar Sigurðarson, the 'Circle Flute' is a unique musical instrument that features four transverse flutes bound together with connecting tubes, forming a circular silver-plated brass flute with a diameter of 2.5 meters. During performances, a quartet of flutists play this large circular instrument for a single listener, who becomes a live sounding board.
Crafted with the help of musician Michael Schmid, the 'Circle Flute' provides a one-of-a-kind acoustic experience by mixing harmonics, interference, whispers, and wind sounds. It offers a physical encounter for the listener standing at the center, allowing them to feel the rhythmic undulations emitted by the sound waves.
The 'Circle Flute' made its debut in Iceland during a ten-day in-situ workshop led by a quartet of professional flutists and composer Þráinn Hjálmarsson. The result was showcased as a performance at Lafayette Anticipations in Paris and has been used by Björk during her world tour, 'Cornucopia.'
‘The instrument requires four players to come together into a quartet where each player is indispensable’ — Björk
Of the ‘Circle Flute’, Björk has said: 'The instrument requires four players to come together into a quartet where each player is indispensable, and given that the instrument cannot be played privately, each player’s relationship to the instrument becomes inseparable from their relationship with the other players.'
